5 Reasons for Bad Usability
Here's 5 reasons why companies deliberately use bad usability in their web sites. Some are effective part of their business model. Others are based on myths!
- Preventing core functionality if it loses money - Making users full out forms by hand to claim rebates etc.
- Locking users into a checkout process - Amazon.com and many others insist on locking you into the checkout process once you start it with no links to leave and return, even if you are leaving to add more products to your shopping cart. Amazon must have some data to support their approach!
- Getting all users details up front - Hate this! And no excuses... Compare this approach to the new web2.0 companies like Backpack who just ask for an email address, and don't even require you to validate; put in your email address and make up a password and start.
- Offering barriers to getting full content - Subscription model of NY Times and others.
- Funneling all visitors through the homepage - Not needed especially of you consider the power of targetted landing pages in PPC and SEO.
